Today being Independence Day, it seemed an appropriate time to break my long silence with an appropriate song. May God bless our troops, still out fighting for our freedom. I find it pathetic that so many people use that freedom to undermine the very individuals who have fought and died so that they can say what they are saying without fear of arrest. Someone famous once said that the United States was a country that wouldn’t need to be conquered because it would would destroy itself from within. That someone, unfortunately, appears to have been correct. But, for the real Americans out there, here is a great song from Lee Greenwood…

In the eighties, the Charlie Daniels Band might not have been the very first band that came to mind when you thought about country music, but it was definitely in the top ten. And when they DID come to mind, this is the song that you were probably thinking of. Until they started doing gospel music, it was arguably the best song they ever did… THE DEVIL WENT DOWN TO GEORGIA.

Okay, once in a while a modern singer does something I like, and this song is it. DO YOU WANT FRIES WITH THAT by Tim Magraw is the best country song I have heard in years. The horrific plane crash that killed singer Buddy Holly also claimed the life of the pilot and two other musicians. Richie Valens story was told in the 1980s movie “La Bamba”. I understand that there is supposed to be a movie about the life of The Big Bopper as well, but I haven’t seen it and do not know the title. However, like Buddy Holly, he had songs that will live forever. What follows is his hit CHANTILLY LACE.

Old movies have given us some of the best music of all time. One source for great music was the old children’s movie, “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang”. In addition to the theme song, other memorable tunes, like ME OLD BAMBOO and TOOTS SWEETS can be found. My favorite, however, is the DOLL ON A MUSIC BOX song from that movie. In the video clip below is the actual footage from the movie of that song.

Memorability can be a problem for performers. One hit wonders abound, and in most cases, people can’t remember their names when their hit song comes up. Memorability was never a problem for this artist, however. Barry Manilow is a living legend. From his song MANDY, which is a great song that you can’t really tell is about his dog, to COPACABANA, which is shown below in this video clip, Manilow’s versatility and incredible voice guarantee that he won’t be forgotten anytime soon. By the way, the person who put together the slide show for this song did a GREAT job!
