The year is 1972. About ten years before, the country reeled with shock as the announcement came that Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper had died in a plane crash. Vietnam was a major issue, and the country was about to start ignoring our returning troops. And Don McLean released his unforgettable tribute to Buddy Holly. AMERICAN PIE has been marked by Billboard as the number two song of the seventies, second only to “Stairway to Heaven”… and there are some of us who think the ranking should have been reversed.
