The 1970s were in many ways a confused and confusing time. The Vietnam War was ending, and so was the day of the flower child. And, between when those stopped and the electronics revolution began, in a lot of ways, people just didn’t know what to do with themselves. Most of us found more productive ways to go than the subject of this song, though. Ray Stevens, as always, managed to make us smile, and for that we were grateful.

I Married Joan!

Saturday, July 7th, 2007

Does anyone else remember the television series I MARRIED JOAN? It starred Joan Davis. And it also starred Jim Baccus, who, although no one seems to remember him as anything other than Thurston Howell III or possibly Mr. Magoo, actually did a great job in the role. At the time, it was arguably the funniest thing on television.

Celebrating Independence!

Wednesday, July 4th, 2007

Happy Independence Day. The sentiment has nothing to do with the movie of the same name. Independence Day is a good time for reflecting upon that independence and the changes that have occurred in this country since that first celebation so very long ago. Even in my own life, the changes have been drastic. When I was born, there was no such thing as Social Security. The governemnt, for the most part, knew that we the people had individual intelligence of our own. They gradually stopped believing that as laws were enacted taking our freedoms from us, one by one. Yet we are still the freest country on the globe. No Independence Day celebration would be complete without this classic clip, performed by James Cagney, and written by the great George M. Cohen, who was the original YANKEE DOODLE DANDY.

Remember THE JETSONS?

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007

Okay, here’s another great 1960s-1970s cartoon intro. You know, it really chaps that our children and grandchildren have no clue about the original cartoons. Their entire impression of the classic cartoons seems to be based on those cheap, sleezy movie versions they have been coming out with over the last few years. I don’t even WANT to talk about my opinion of the Scooby Doo movie. And that Rocky and Bullwinkle thing? Bah. I could feel my IQ dropping as I watched it. So, here we go with the original JETSONS intro.

GEORGE OF THE JUNGLE TV Cartoon Intro

Monday, July 2nd, 2007

No collection of sixties television themes would be complete without the theme song to GEORGE OF THE JUNGLE. Every kid growing up in that era watched it, and I can assure you that every parent and grandparent of cartoon watching kids had this song dripping out of their ears. We found ourselves humming it while making dinner or cleaning the house. This song just would not LEAVE. I guess it still hasn’t.
