The Lawrence Welk Show

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

Welcome back!

Watching the Lawrence Welk show may seem dull to today’s generation, but there isn’t a member of this family from ANY generation that isn’t familiar with the closing credits theme from the show, which I have here today. We still watch the show every week when it airs on PBS. Hope this brings back fond memories for you as well!

Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend

Monday, September 24th, 2007

I’m going to include two versions on this one. The first is the classic Marilyn Monroe version, pulled from the movie, and the second, Jane Russell’s version, from that same movie. There is actually a third version, which I tend to like better, done by Carol Channing, but I couldn’t find that one. It, incidentally, was from a completely different movie that starred Carol Channing and Marilyn Monroe.

Anita Bryant

Friday, September 21st, 2007

Anita Bryant was always a bit controversial, once she hit adulthood. From the risque (at the time) beach movies to her political views, a lot of people had a lot to say, and much of it wasn’t good. But no matter what you thought of the woman herself, you couldn’t argue with her music. Her voice is incredible. Here, she sings OH HOLY NIGHT.

Trucker Songs

Monday, September 17th, 2007

Back in the seventies, what were labled TRUCKER SONGS were an interesting mix of country and, well, NOT country. C.W. McCall was pretty good at coming up with trucker songs that became popular, and none were as popular as CONVOY.

Karma Chameleon

Friday, September 14th, 2007

And today’s generation thinks they own “weird” in music. Back in the eighties, Boy George and the Culture Club were the absolute height of weird, and if they hadn’t sounded so good… but they did. And they continued to sound good through several top hits, including KARMA CHAMELEON.

The Rock and Roll Waltz

Wednesday, September 12th, 2007

First, sorry it’s been a while since my last post. Things have been purely hectic around here. So, on to the song of the day… Kay Starr recorded The Rock and Roll Waltz in the fifties, and even a lot of today’s generation still think it’s a completely cool song… if you can talk to them where their friends can’t hear, of course:)

Begin the Beguine

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

This is arguably the most beautiful song ever recorded by the extremely talented Jo Stafford. We were still in the big band, pre-war era, and the lower, huskier voices still ruled the airwaves. Songs like this, you just want to lean back, close your eyes and dream while they play on.

Walkin After Midnight with Patsy Cline

Sunday, September 2nd, 2007

Patsy Cline was the ultimate female country singer of the sixties. There are very few people even today who can’t hum at least one of her hits, and most even know who sang them. Patsy Cline was yet another of several performers who died young and tragically. With many others, you have to wonder if they would have been so famous if they had lived, but Patsy was already a legend before the plane crash took her life.
