Candy canes began as straight white sticks of sugar candy used to decorated the Christmas trees. A choir leader at Cologne Cathedral chose to have the ends ctooked to depict a shepherd’s crook and he would pass them out to the children to keep them hushed up during the church services. It wasn’t until about the 20th century that candy canes acquired their red stripes.

With that in mind, in choosing a song for today I went with this song from the 1920s instead of a more traditional Christmas carol. Happy holidays!

An 80s Christmas Song

Sunday, December 23rd, 2007

Back in the eighties, on of the pivotal soft rock groups to hit the mainstream was WHAM!. They had several really pretty songs, and were quite popular in the time before their breakup. Personally, I think they should have kept the duet together. I’ve heard some of what they did separately since then, and it doesn’t even hold a candle to their abilities as a duet. In any case, in the spirit of the season, here is WHAM! with “Last Christmas”.

RIP, Leader of the Band

Sunday, December 16th, 2007

Dan Folgelberg, best known for his soft rock style and hits like “Leader of the Band”, has passed away following a battle with prostate cancer. He was fifty six years old.

His soft voice and tender style gave him a place in our memories that will live long after this day. Our thoughts will be with those close to him. He will be missed.
