Mr. Sandman!

The good news is that most kids today actually recognize this song. The bad news is, they recognize it as “that old song from BACK TO THE FUTURE”. The Chordettes released this song in the fifties, and it was a major hit. They were, it turns out, among the last of a dying breed… singers who actually knew how to harmonize. In any case, this is one of my favorite songs of all time, and I am very glad I was able to find it and share it with you today.

Botch-a-me!

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

You know, a real disease among young people is that they think they were the originators of everything. I have literally had young teens tell me I wouldn’t like a specific song because the song was a “moves” song, with a great beat but the words didn’t mean anything. Aparently they believe that all older people must find meaning in their music. And every time I hear it, this is the song I want to pull out of the attic. Rosemary Clooney had it all over these modern performers, didn’t she:)

Music, Music, Music!

Sunday, August 19th, 2007

Back to the fifties again. Teresa Brewer hit it big with MUSIC MUSIC MUSIC. Her high pitched voiced earned her the nickname “Squeeky”, but it never hurt her populrity any. This one is the unedited 1950 version of the song, lots of instrumental to it, and she sounds as good as she ever did.

LOTS of Ritzy Behavior

Sunday, July 29th, 2007

The song “Puttin’ On The Ritz” made a big splash when Fred Astaire danced to it. Personally, I have always consideered his to be the “authentic” version, certainly the best. There is just a timeless, classic apeal in the singing and dancing talents of Fred Astaire.

In the 1980s, long after Fred Astaire was finished with it, Taco remade the song with more modern effects. However, no sooner was the video released then controversy hit, and BIG. The whole video had to be edited and re-released, because Taco’s original video showed two men in vaudevillian minstrel “blackface”. The fact that the makeup was exactly in keepig with the period of the song made no difference, history was swept under the rug in favor of political correctness. THIS is the “banned” version, which still contains the minstrel makeup. You decide.

I Married Joan!

Saturday, July 7th, 2007

Does anyone else remember the television series I MARRIED JOAN? It starred Joan Davis. And it also starred Jim Baccus, who, although no one seems to remember him as anything other than Thurston Howell III or possibly Mr. Magoo, actually did a great job in the role. At the time, it was arguably the funniest thing on television.

THE THREE BELLS aka Little Jimmy Brown (1959)

Friday, June 22nd, 2007

Going back to the end of the 1950s, THE THREE BELLS, also known as “Little Jimmy Brown”, hit the airwaves. Even at the time, it had a classic flavor to it, and a whole lot of people thought it was much older than it actually was, possibly a remake. Almost everyone who hears it likes it, even with it’s semi somber ending. The classic simplicity of the song kept people interested.

MULE TRAIN (1950)

Sunday, June 17th, 2007

Welcome to my blog, and welcome back to 1950. World War II has been over for a short while, the Cuban Missile Crisis is not yet an issue, and the country is having a pretty good decade. As a young married adult, life was grand. We were halfway through the century, the future was looking bright, and Frankie Lane was singing MULR TRAIN.
