Trucker Songs

Back in the seventies, what were labled TRUCKER SONGS were an interesting mix of country and, well, NOT country. C.W. McCall was pretty good at coming up with trucker songs that became popular, and none were as popular as CONVOY.

Top Of The World

Monday, August 27th, 2007

This song is chilling, in retrospect. Karen Carpenter’s death from Anorexia Nervosa sent the entire music world reeling. The only good thing that came out of it was that parents started checking their children a little more closely, and a lot of people who desperately needed it got help. It’s an incredible shame that it didn’t help Karen Carpenter. A voice like hers can never be replaced.

The King!

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

Elvis Presley had many different styles, but you could always tell who was singing. It didn’t matter whether it was rock, gospel, or country, it was still Elvis. Back in the seventies this song was making the rounds on th radio stations quite a bit, and it made me cry neasrly every time I heard it. This song was one of the first “conscience” songs of the era, songs that point out a social problem and hope someone does something. So, here we go, with IN THE GHETTO.

The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia, TWICE!

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

Back in the seventies, “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia” was a movie. I do not recall all the stars, but the main role was played by Kristy McNichol. Tanya Tucker did an incredible job wit the original song, and I am displaying that one first.

Much later, in the nineties, Reba McEntire came along and, well, completely rewrote the entire sone. If you ask me, little moe than the title is the same. Taken as the same song, um, no. But, seen as completely different songs, they are both great. Here’s the one from Reba… you can decide for yourself.

A Knight to Remember

Saturday, July 21st, 2007

Gladys Knight has become a true icon in this country, and there is reason for it. She is GOOD. This particular clip is from back in the seventies, the early seventies, before she went Pip-less. I truly love watching these old clips. Just the clothing styles alone make it well worth it.

Ode to Billy Joe

Friday, July 20th, 2007

I read the book “Ode to Billy Joe” when it came out, oh, back in the sixties, I suppose. And I saw the movie, I think Robbie Benson was in it. The movie and the song were from the seventies, I do believe… that’s where I am putting this one, anyway. If I am wrong, let me know and i will re-catagorize it. Bobby Gentry does an excellent job with a song that makes no sense whatsoever if you haven’t read the book, or at least seen the movie. Homosexual conduct was a pretty cloaked topic back then in most circles, and I suppose that, even though that was underneath the storyline in the book, they just didn’t feel like putting it into the song. The song is good, anyway.

The Streak

Sunday, July 8th, 2007

The 1970s were in many ways a confused and confusing time. The Vietnam War was ending, and so was the day of the flower child. And, between when those stopped and the electronics revolution began, in a lot of ways, people just didn’t know what to do with themselves. Most of us found more productive ways to go than the subject of this song, though. Ray Stevens, as always, managed to make us smile, and for that we were grateful.

Remember THE JETSONS?

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007

Okay, here’s another great 1960s-1970s cartoon intro. You know, it really chaps that our children and grandchildren have no clue about the original cartoons. Their entire impression of the classic cartoons seems to be based on those cheap, sleezy movie versions they have been coming out with over the last few years. I don’t even WANT to talk about my opinion of the Scooby Doo movie. And that Rocky and Bullwinkle thing? Bah. I could feel my IQ dropping as I watched it. So, here we go with the original JETSONS intro.

AMERICAN PIE (1972)

Monday, June 18th, 2007

The year is 1972. About ten years before, the country reeled with shock as the announcement came that Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper had died in a plane crash. Vietnam was a major issue, and the country was about to start ignoring our returning troops. And Don McLean released his unforgettable tribute to Buddy Holly. AMERICAN PIE has been marked by Billboard as the number two song of the seventies, second only to “Stairway to Heaven”… and there are some of us who think the ranking should have been reversed.
