Marty Robbins made quite an impact on the musical world. Arguably his most famous song, EL PASO, was written in a very short time as he was traveling through that city. The following video clip contains an intro from, I believe, his son, telling about that trip. Marty Robbins will always be missed by his fans everywhere. And now, on to EL PASO.

Baby Phat is an interesting brand with an interesting story behind it. Originally, the name was simply a publicity issue, when tiny tees were put out with that name on them to bring attention to the Phat Pharm label. The tees took off, and soon there was a whole Baby Phat line available, not only tees, but other items as well, including the cutting edge design baby phat handbag that are on the market now. Back in the eighties, you just didn’t think about country music without Alabama or the Oak Ridge Boys coming to mind. My daughter even worked at an Oak Ridge Boys concert back in 1986, which took place at Arkansas State University. (She was on the concert committee back then… the stories she could tell you!) I am on an Oak Ridge Boys kick today, so, here they are, singing one of their most memorable songs. My daughter assures me that they sang this one at that concert… ELVIRA.

The current housing market being what it is, the idea of buying a new home can get pretty scary. I know this tells you how old I am, but back when my parents bought a house, they never even dreamed of taking out a loan to pay for it. Back then, Mortgages were available, I suppose, but most people just saved and pinched pennies till they could afford to buy. But, in my lifetime, the world has changed a lot. These days if you were to save till you could afford it, and let the money sit in the bank getting taxed every year, you’d never make it. Still, one must be careful. Fixed rate mortgages are available, and are much better, as many people are finding out, than ones with interest rates that can change at the drop of a hat.

Especially since the sixties, when famous and semi-famous musicians seemed to start dying off in record numbers, the living stars have been finding out that a tribute to a dead popular singer almost always makes for a radio hit. I bet most people can STILL sing most of the words to “American Pie”, which was a tribute to Buddy Holly. One of the better examples of recent years is MIDNIGHT IN MONTGOMERY. Shown in the video clip below, this song is a tribute to Hank Williams, done by Alan Jackson. The black and white footage makes for excellent effect.

The sixties were a decade of extremes in the musical world. The Beatles, Elvis, The Yardbirds, Patsy Cline. Almost all of the groups and solo artists were worth listening to (with the exception of things like “I Am The Walrus” by the Beatles. Thanks a lot, John!). On the other hand, The Lawrence Welk Show and it’s big band sound was still going strong. And, somewhere in the middle of all that were singers like Claude King. What follows is his 1962 hit, WOLVERTON MOUNTAIN.

The 1950s were a great time for beautiful music, and this song is one of the best. Performed here by Patti Page, THE TENNESSEE WALTZ has become a time honored classic. Many artists, up to and including Bonnie Rait, have performed it over the years, but none have even come close to the pure, honest sound as performed in this video clip from 1950. Even with the poor sound quality because of the recording, it doesn’t get much better than this. I hope you enjoy it!
